Local Activities
Local Activities Other Things To Do in Cheboygan, MI We KNOW you will enjoy all we have to offer, but here is a list of noteworthy lesser known area attractions that Captain Jennifer frequents regularly with her family. Many are outside activities that can help you enjoy a little more of the “natural” north. Our first recommendation is one that ties very closely with the history of our area (and that offered on our shipwreck tour) and an absolute BLAST! The Jack Pine Lumberjack show is one of our favorites. There are SEVERAL wonderful nature hikes in the area, one right across the river from our port! The Children’s Trail is a unique opportunity to enjoy some education and wildlife for all ages! Duncan Bay nature preserve offers a beautiful path through the wetlands and to the shore of Lake Huron! Gordon Turner Park is the IDEAL place for a picnic and swim (and boasts our best beach), right in Cheboygan! It’s also a wonderful place to bird watch. We love to tell everyone about Kitch-Iti-Kipi , a state park located in the Upper Peninsula- about an hour and a half away. It’s WELL worth the trip! The USCG Icebreaker Museum is a great way to actually tour an icebreaker vessel! One of Captain Jenn’s personal favorites, The Old Mackinaw Point Lighthouse offers everyone a chance to see what the deeper wrecks look like today! Fishing along The river is always great fun, you can get gear at Katfisher Bait and Tackle . These are just a few we like to mention for those of you wanting a more “up north” experience…less crowds and more outdoor adventures. Let us know what else needs to be added as you explore! Meet Our Crew and Fleet
Story
Captain Jenn, owner and captain at Nautical North Family Adventures, taught school in Cheboygan before ending that career to become a homeschooling mom to her three boys. During the course of homeschooling, she developed a business class for her boys (and herself!) when an idea was sparked in her heart to lead her boys and her to a much better life. Together, Captain Jenn and her three boys wrote a 38-page business plan to begin Nautical North Family Adventures. They pitched it to “Invest Cheboygan” (a shark-tank like local program), in an effort to procure funds to get the business loan. They lost the contest. Two days later, Captain Jenn received a phone call from a private investor that was watching from the audience – his words a welcome relief – “Hey kid, I think you’ve got what it takes, how much do you need for the loan?” The rest is history. He has been paid back, the company is in year 7, and Captain Jenn has written a book about all the miracles along the way. It’s title is ‘Captain of My Own Ship; Sunshine’s Story”. Proceeds from the book sales are deposited into a non-profit set up in conjunction with the Cheboygan Community Foundation and a local bank to benefit any domestic violence survivors in similar situations-stuck in the situation due to financial abuse or financial insecurity, offering hope to others every day! This is a Must do when you are up North Michigan in Cheboygan! Captain Jen is Amazing with her bright Smile and Adventurous Spirit! She gives lots of historical insight on the area and gets the little ones to get involved with the things they can see along the trip and even lets them participate behind the wheel of the boat! What a Great outing for everyone! It can get chilly on the water so if you forget to bring your sweatshirt she has them on board to purchase so you can bring home as a memorable souvenir. Warm, soft and comfy ❤️

Captains Jenn & Maria were a delight to sail with! We were booked for the 3:00 cruise, but we received a call morning of that the waves were far too choppy and they asked if we could switch to the sunset cruise. Wow, was that ever the right choice! The lake and sunset were breathtaking and it was lovely even with the waves still rocking a bit! So cool to be able to see the shipwrecks through the glass bottom, and both Jenn & Maria were absolute rays of sunshine! Great way to end our trip in Michigan!

This is one of those things I don't want to rate because people might book my spot ... but it's not fair of me to hoard my treasure. We took an evening shipwreck cruise and it was fantastic. God gifted us with perfect weather and water conditions, but even without that we would have been happy. Capt. Jenn ended up with a bunch of super-interested and involved passengers with our group, and she & Danielle kept us on our toes! Cap - not sorry I went all Expedition on you; that added even more awesomeness to your personal story imo! And who knew Cormorants were becoming a nuisance here!? Special thanks for sharing the diary pages "attached" to the message in a bottle you found; they made history come to life. If you are reading this and intrigued...book a trip and learn more.

This is rated 5 stars for a reason. Captain Jen and her crew are just super friendly and have great stories to tell during the whole trip. This is also a very family friendly activity. My kids 12, 10, and 5 all had a great time. There are budget friendly snacks on board. There is also a restroom available on the ship... just in case. It's a nice way to get out on the lake and just have a nice experience on the water.

We will be doing this every year! We did the sunset shipwreck tour, and seeing the debris through the glass floor was a unique experience. But the star of the show, for me, was the sunset view and the wind in my hair, as we listened to music and relaxed. The staff were personable, kind, and knowledgeable. They shared a multitude of interesting facts during the tour. 10/10, will return again

Ahoy!! We had a fantastic time on the tour today! The shipwrecks are great, but what really made this experience were the co-captains. If you’re in Cheboygan, do not miss this!

What a wonderful way to see and learn about the area. We had a little rain on the ride out, but our captain kept going and the weather cleared up. Our boys loved snorkling over the shipwrecks and cooling off in the water. This tour was interesting and fun. The glass bottomed boat made the views accessible to all. Thanks Nautical North Family Adventures for a great afternoon.

We had a great time on the Shipwreck cruise with Captain Jenn, Andrew, and Zoey. They were very informative, funny, and attentive especially to one of our friends who was a little scared going out into open water. We liked it so much we also went out on the Sunset cruise the next evening. Highly recommend this cruise if in the Cheboygan area.

Absolutely a great experience. Well worth the time and money. Capt Jen and Capt Maria were awesome. We had 18 in our party and chartered a shipwreck and lighthouse tour with snorkeling at the ship wreck. Our grandkids (ages 11-22) couldn’t stop talking about how it. And in my world….they’re a tough group to find “new” adventures. All 14 were thrilled.

Great for seafaring individuals and scuba divers. Circle around Shoal Lighthouse and hover over 3 sunken ships. Go under drawbridge on Cheboygan River. Captain and first mates are a class act. Several optional to choose from including a sunset cruise.

We went with our family of 5 and had a WONDERFUL time. We did the sunset shipwreck tour and it was so cool. We were able to see the shipwrecks clearly because the bottom of the boat has light on it. The crew members were funny and very inclusive to all the little kids on the boat. Little kids were able to blow the horn and even “drive” the boat which was so fun. Highly recommend and would do it again!
