This FREE field trip offers a unique opportunity for students to witness engineering marvels firsthand, learn about the crucial importance of our local ecosystem, and delve into the rich history that shaped this vital waterway. What awaits your students: Navigating the Locks: Experience the impressive mechanics of the Cheboygan Lock and Dam in action! Students will witness how boats are raised and lowered, gaining a practical understanding of engineering principles and the importance of this system for navigation. A River's Tale: Our knowledgeable guides will weave together the captivating history of the Cheboygan River. From its significance to Indigenous peoples and early settlers to its role in the booming lumber era and its present-day importance, students will learn about the human connection to this vital resource. The Unseen Invaders: Dive into the critical issue of maritime invasive species. Students will learn about the ecological and economic threats these non-native organisms pose to the Great Lakes ecosystem, how they arrive, and what can be done to help prevent their spread.
